Discuss advocacy on behalf of the client as part of the role of the nurse.
Topic: Advocacy and exercising moral judgement
Health literature illustrates that health resources are not equally
distributed; that informed choice about care and treatment options does not always occur, and that moral and ethical issues arise in health care that may harm people physically, psychologically, and spiritually (Johnstone 2008). As part of professional practice, occasions will arise where nurses must consider taking a stand either collectively or individually on matters of moral and ethical importance (Johnstone 2008). As a result, nurses may choose to engage in advocacy. A period of careful consideration and reflection will normally precede this.
Question:
Discuss advocacy on behalf of the client as part of the role of the nurse.
Points to consider could include (but are not necessarily confined to):
? the relationship of advocacy to autonomy
? the continuum of advocacy within the uncertainty of the clinical
environment
? actual and potential costs of advocacy
o personally
o professionally
? guidance (if any) provided for nurses via the ANMAC
competencies and/or Codes of Conduct and Ethics
? advocacy and the law
An exhaustive list of discussion points is not required, rather, you should talk to a fewer number of points in depth.
Your arguments/discussion points should be logical and objective, and address relevant issues. To achieve this, avoid “I feel” or “I believe ” statements. This style of writing is different to the journal. Write in the third person using formal academic language.
Presentation:
? Give your assignment a title at the top of the first page;
? Write in the third person; avoid personal pronouns such as ‘I’ and ‘you’;
? Avoid long, confusing sentences and check that your tenses
(past, present and future) are consistent within the same
sentence;
? Avoid posing questions; these detract from the strengths of your discussion;
? Use plain English. It is essential that you demonstrate that you
understand the nature of the topic.
Referencing:
? Use CDU Harvard style
? Your reference list should contain a minimum of 10 quality
references that are not more than 5-10 years old, unless you
can validate the use of older sources. This does not include
Wikipedia or dictionaries;
? The majority of your sources should be journal articles rather
than books or websites. Access the electronic data bases for
journal articles, which must be from refereed (peer reviewed)
journals (this does not include editorials, letters to the editor, etc.
? Internet sites should be used sparingly. Websites used should be those of reputable professional organisations such as ANMAC.
Do not use lay websites, Wikipedia, or personal blogs for
example.
Physical presentation
? Use Times New Roman, or Arial 12-point font; not bold typeface
? Use 1.5 or double line spacing
? Include page numbers; provide your name, student number and the Assignment Number in the document footer;
