Choices are the center point within the human existence. Some people make choices for only themselves yet those choices affect many while others make choices for many but only has an affect on one. The sentimental premonitions that guide how choices are made can unveil results that are everlasting. Martin Luther King had a premonition in what he signifies as a dream that one day blacks and whites live alongside the other in harmony with the comforts of equality. What started as a dream required choices. Choices require actions to be taken. Actions produce results and just as a circle has no ending the cycle repeats with different beginnings and different endings. It is one’s hope that upon reaching the ripe age of 86 life’s continuous cycle would have elicited more benefits than detriments. As a post-graduate student studying in the field of school counseling, I seek to assist students to understand their choices, apply strategic methods to allow students to envision that actions have consequences, and facilitate parental/guardian support.Younger minds are constantly developing and require guidance. Often people assume that the options are straightforward choose the right or choose the wrong but it is not always that simple. Of course, the obvious choice is the right one; however, there can be several different variances of right. For example, Lisa is in the 9th grade debating if she should take college predatory courses vs technical preparatory course throughout high school. Lisa has an honest opinion that tech prep is easier. She has also discussed the choice with her friends who have all pre-decided to also take the easier route. As Lisa’s advisor, I would determine Lisa’s future plans after high school. In this example, Lisa has told me that she wants to be a Radiologist. To pursue a career as a Radiologist, a secondary education is required to include a bachelor’s degree, medical school, and internship. Before Lisa can enroll into a 4 year college she will need to not only acquire a high school diploma but excel on her SAT scores. Generally, the advanced courses taught to prepare students for college are taught in the college preparatory classes within the initial 4 years of high school. If Lisa takes the Technical prep courses during high school, it is a possibility that she will not score what is required for admission into a university or she may have to take remedial courses extending her graduation date. In high school, either one of the choices of obtaining a college preparatory or technical preparatory focused high school diploma would be better than not choosing to attain neither. There is one choice, college preparatory curriculum, that ranks higher than the other due to Lisa’s career goals. As this information is communicated to Lisa or any other student under similar circumstances, it is one’s hope that students are able to evaluate their choices and choose wisely.As with anything in life, it is easy to stray away from goals especially when students do not realize that their actions have consequences. Throughout a child’s tenure as a student, providing random life exercises to reach their dreams can significantly increase their achievement rate and avoid circumstance that could cause delay. As a youth woman counselor within my church, I am teaching this month’s lesson covering topics that include student and social etiquette. One section of the student etiquette lesson will review dress codes as mandated within the school handbook. Activities will include a fashion show, internet search for sites where appropriate attire can be purchased, as well as a lesson on measurement, size, and fitting. The less revealing the more serious one’s peer and administrators will perceive her. Students that are inappropriately dressed for school may be forced to leave and any form of missing class is missing valuable education time. The social etiquette lesson will contain an analysis of social media outlets including Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram just to name a few. Examples will be reviewed and discussed so that each young lady can acknowledge proper use and presentation.
